WIAW: Salsa, Salad, Sweets

Image
Summer is here, the school year is ending, and I am ready to get blogging.  To help me get back in the habit, what could be better than a little What-I-Ate-Weduesday!?  I only remembered to photograph a little over half of what I ate, but I'm getting there.  I'll get the hang of it again!

Here goes!

Breakfast:Scrambled eggs with salsa and cheddar.  Less morning work stress = time to sit down and eat a real meal!

[Not pictured: a spoonful of sauerkraut and a few pieces of honeydew]

Lunch: Typical salad in typical take-out container.  Lettuce, hearts of palm, avocado, red peppers, and some London broil from my mom, all topped off with some dijon mustard and apple cider vinegar.  Salads like this are my go-to for my BYO lunch at work, and are likely to remain a staple throughout the summer. Salads are refreshing in the heat!

Snack/Dinner: Not pictured, but I my afternoon also included a mix: a small Whole Foods salad-bar mix, some almonds, and a few chocolate-covered cranberries.  T…

Minimize Flavor Variety

Image
I'm not talking about limiting flavor. Flavor is good. But variety? Does less variety mean more satiety?

Because I love frozen yogurt so much, I couldn't resist reading when I stumbled upon Glamour's The Dos and Don'ts of Frozen Yogurt.  In it, Carolyn Brown (M.S., R.D.), Rachel Beller (M.S., R.D.) and other nutrition experts give great advice involving cup size, toppings, flavors, and more, but the one that most caught my attention was slide 7: Don't Mix Flavors.

"Sure, swirling your two favorite flavors sounds like a great idea, but there's a good reason to resist.  'We have a limit to where our taste buds start fatiguing on a certain flavor,' Blatner says. 'If you pick only one topping and flavor, you actually feel more satisfied than if you were picking multiple things.'"
Hm.  Interesting.  I thought about this for a while.  I've done both ends of the spectrum; I've swirled 4 flavors into my single cup at 16 Handles, and other …

Eat: 16 Handles

I love froyo.  Anyone who knows me can confirm this statement, and I'm sure froyo has made its way into my blog once or twice.  It's my special treat, my pick-me-up, my happiness in a cup.  It's not the healthiest, most natural thing out there, but there are worse indulgences.  Plus, treats can be part of a healthy diet, too.  As Bob Harper explains in his new book The Skinny Rules (more to come!), splurges are an "ingredient in your diet.  When you plan something, you are in control."

To stay FitFluential, I'll take this moment to remind you to eat your vegetables, try a SPINNING class, and write down a goal. =D

Now, back to my personal vicetreat: oh, and for those of my readers who are not teens or twenty-somethings living in or near a city, "froyo" is frozen yogurt.  Just wanted to make sure that was clear before we move on.

Read more for my favorites, taste-testing, fruit toppings, and the dare...
