Make Your Gym Habit Stick (Three Tips)

Image
I used to be a gym rat.  I didn't go every day, but I went several times a week and I stuck to my routine.  After a summer spent outside, dedicated to my running goal, and a fall spent getting and getting over a respiratory infection.... I fell out my gym habit, hard.

My schedule no longer had regular gym days built in, and I lost interest in some of the classes I used to attend religiously.  In December, I was finally able to re-instate my healthy habits, and--so far--I'm meeting my January goal of three workouts weekly.  For this reason, I thought it's the perfect time to discuss ways that I manage to stick to my gym habit, and how you can, too.

Maybe YOU set a new year's resolution to go to the gym more often, try a new type of exercise class, or become a runner.  Whatever your commitment is, here are some tried and true ways to ensure you meet your fitness goals:

Health update: I'm finally well again!

After over a month of pain, my cough has finally disappeared. My recovery makes me really glad I made the hard but healthy choicenot to run the 10k in October--definitely the smart decision.  While I was sick, I intentionally stepped back exercise because my lungs couldn't handle it and I really wanted to get better.  There's little glory in coughing myself through a workout, no need to put additional stress on an already stressed body.

BUT, feeling well and ready to work out... how do I get back in?

For me, it started with walking.  As I explained in my post about not running my 10k, even walking around the city was leaving me short of breath.  So, that's step one: Early in November, I began going on the treadmill on a slight incline, walking at 3.0 mph for 20 - 30 minutes.  Later, I increased to 3.5-4 mph and also added in yoga stretching to warm up my muscles again.

In the second week, I tried the elliptical to get my heart r…

BODYPUMP! {Review and 30-Day NYSC Gym Pass Giveaway!}

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Les Mills.  As always, the opinions reflected below are entirely my own.

Senior year of college, I was a regular at the student gym's "BODY COMBAT" class.  This is where I fell in love with martial arts-style classes.  It was all about moving to the music, harnessing your inner strength, and kicking butt.   That class is still one of my favorites; I loved every minute and have missed it ever since.  Turns out, the folks that created the Body Combat classes have a slew of other group fitness programs that are offered at various locations throughout the country.  The company, Les Mills, has created 13 global group training programs, which now have millions of participants in over 15,000 gyms in 90 countries.

Their weights class, BODYPUMP®, debuted in New York Sports Clubs across NYC this week. They moved in with a bang; they are now offering an average of 130 classes every week at 36 NYSC locations... WOW.  Th…

DMF: Dance Motivation Fitness

Image
From ages 2-15, I took dance classes weekly. It included hip hop, tap, and jazz, and I enjoyed it year after year.
Because I loved dancing growing up and my affinity for group exercise classes, you'd think I might enjoy dance workout classes, right? You'd have been wrong. I'm not saying I never do them, but they're really not my favorite, probably because the options were few.  Zumba never did it for me; it felt forced and on occasion boring--the same moves, no matter what the music. There are some dance exercise classes that are great, but, as always, it depends entirely on the instructor.
Guess what? I've found a FANTASTIC instructor.

Lindi Duesenberg founded Dance Motivation Fitness (DMF) in January 2013 (just 7 months ago!) and it seems to be off to a great start. Last week, her team reached out, inviting me to sample the new DMF workout at DANY Studio in New York City, and I am so glad I said yes.
